What Causes Test Anxiety in Our Children and How to Stop Them

Test Anxiety

It is normal for some of us to somewhat feel anxious before, during and after an exam. Before we take an exam, we fear that the questions are going to be so difficult and because we think that we have not prepared enough for it, we usually rack our brains out trying to recall the contents of our notebooks and thick textbooks. This is just one of many causes of test anxiety. The fact that we really have not prepared that much for the exam is enough to make us regretful. But the thought that even if we have done everything we can, but there may still be tons of questions we know nothing about that could pop up in the exam can definitely make us temporarily insane.

Though children may develop this form of anxiety, this is more common in high school and college students. Most children do not really consider taking tests a major part of their lives and as long as they have reviewed most of their lessons, they would not feel any form of anxiety. In fact, some of them even get excited whenever there is an exam because most of the tests they take cover just what they tackled in class and are often easy to answer. However, once children do feel anxious about taking tests and if this condition develops into a serious case of test anxiety, it could be scary.

More causes of test anxiety involve just the fear of taking tests. It could be that a child has taken an exam before and failed badly. If that has happened to you in the past, you are expected to develop a fear of tests especially if you have prepared fully for that exam and you’re still receiving failing scores. These past experiences often become causes of test anxiety as these become associated with failure. When children develop an association between taking tests and failing, it would really be hard to convince them that everything will be alright even after they take the test and see the results. To avoid these causes of test anxiety, you have to be careful with your children and assist them in studying for upcoming exams. You have to assure them that if they do study really hard, they would be able to get high scores and not fail again.

This is risky, though, because you would not know what to do if they do fail the exam. Furthermore, one of the causes of test anxiety is pressure from parents to do well, so you have to be careful in setting expectations. Make sure that your child knows that he will still be loved even if he fails an exam every now and then. These causes of test anxiety can be gotten rid of only if you assure your child that it is normal to fail once in a while. If you are able to do this, all the probable causes of test anxiety such as poor time management and poor memory organization skills will also be solved.
